Louisville’s first local craft butcher shop opens this week, with a ribbon cutting scheduled for Saturday, September 24 at 9:00 am.  Red Hog is located at 2622 Frankfort Avenue, at the corner of Frankfort and Franck Avenues.

The business features pork, beef, lamb, and poultry, all from local farms.  The meat is currently available as fresh cuts, cooked or cured, in the butcher shop.   A café in the same location is expected to open in October.
Red Hog is operated by Kit Garrett and Bob Hancock, who earlier brought the popular Blue Dog Bakery & Café to Frankfort Avenue.   They have extensively remodeled a building which formerly housed Bennie’s Transmission and a series of smaller businesses before it became vacant several years ago.
“It is wonderful to see Red Hog turn a prominent vacant property into a beautiful spot which compliments Louisville’s local food movement” said Metro Councilman Bill Hollander (D-9), who will take part in the ribbon cutting. “This property has been a missing link in a thriving retail area for many years.”
The opening follows several actions by Louisville Metro.  In August 2015, the Metro Board of Zoning Adjustment approved a variance and three waivers to allow an addition to the back of the building and four additional parking spaces on the side. Hollander spoke in favor of the project at the hearing, noting that the fenced-off property had become an eyesore.  A number of neighbors and the Frankfort Avenue Business Association also voiced their support.
Red Hog also received three METCO loans totaling $265,000 by the Louisville Metropolitan Business Development Corporation to assist Garrett and Hancock in the revitalization of the property.  The loans leveraged $1.3 million in private funds, for a total investment of $1.6 million.  The loans include a $200,000 business loan, $50,000 façade loan and $15,000 accessibility loan.         District 9 Capital Infrastructure Funds assisted with sidewalk repairs along Frankfort Avenue.
The butcher shop opens at 10:00 am, Tuesday through Saturday.
