After a five-year review process spearheaded by Clifton volunteers, rewritten and freshly-illustrated Architectural Design Guidelines for Clifton’s Historic Preservation District are published on Louisville Metro’s Landmarks web site.  An all-volunteer Task Force commenced the review-and-rewrite project in November, 2011, and conducted over thirty-five public meetings before delivering its completed work product for publication last Fall.  Task-Force-member Phil Samuel performed the Task Force’s final act by presenting the illustrated revised Guidelines to the Louisville Landmarks Commission at its February 2017 public meeting (read Phil’s remarks here).

All Clifton property owners need to know that any planned exterior change to any Clifton building or property — including demolition or new construction — must be reviewed and approved through Metro’s Landmarks Office (502-574-6230before the planned change is started. Clifton’s Design Guidelines are essential because they stipulate the rules and standards that help Landmarks officials determine whether a proposed change is appropriate for the Historic District, and thus whether the proposed change should be approved, altered, or — in rare cases — disallowed.  Clifton’s newly-illustrated Guidelines go a step further by educating property owners through Clifton-specific introductions, explanations, examples, graphics, and photographs.
